Overview

The LabVIEW Datalogging and Supervisory Control (DSC) Module extends the LabVIEW graphical development environment with additional functionality for the rapid development of distributed measurement, control, and high-channel-count monitoring applications. The DSC Module enhances the LabVIEW shared variable, supports logging data to the Citadel and relational databases, enhances the Historical Data Viewer and the NI Distributed System Manager, and provides tools for graphing historical or real-time trends, enhancing the security of front panels, and writing custom I/O servers.

System Requirements

In addition to the system requirements for the LabVIEW Development System, the DSC Module has the following requirements:

  • LabVIEW 2015 Base, Full, or Professional Development System (32-bit)

  • At least 2.5 GB of disk space

  • 512 MB of RAM. NI recommends 1 GB of RAM.

  • Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 or later

  • One of the following operating systems for application development:

    Note

    • The DSC Module does not support Windows NT/Me/2000/98/95 or the Windows Server non-R2 editions.

    • Support for Windows Server 2003 R2 may require disabling physical address extensions (PAE). To learn how this might affect your use of Windows Server 2003 and what actions you might have to take, visit ni.com/info and enter the Info Code PAESupport.

    • Windows 8.1/8.0/7/Vista (32-bit and 64-bit)

    • Windows XP SP3

    • Windows Server 2012 R2 (64-bit)

    • Windows Server 2008 R2 (64-bit)

    • Windows Server 2003 R2 (32-bit)

Refer to the LabVIEW Readme for additional system requirements and supported operating systems for LabVIEW 2015.

Installation Instructions

You can install all of your LabVIEW products—including the DSC Module—using the LabVIEW 2015 Platform media. Refer to the LabVIEW Installation Guide on the LabVIEW Platform media for installation instructions and system requirements.

To request additional LabVIEW Platform media, refer to the National Instruments website.

Note

  • If you purchased this product with an NI Software Suite or NI Product Bundle, use the installation media that shipped with your purchase to install this product.

  • The DSC Module requires the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Express. This component is installed by default when you install the DSC Module. Visit ni.com/info and enter the Info Code exafvc for information about how to configure the Microsoft SQL Server.

Licensing

The DSC Module relies on licensing activation. When the evaluation period expires, you must activate a valid DSC Module license to continue using the DSC Module.

The NI OPC Servers application installed with the DSC Module provides a temporary license for a two-hour evaluation period. You must activate a valid license to continue using the NI OPC Servers application after the evaluation period expires.

Product Security and Critical Updates

Visit ni.com/security to view and subscribe to receive security notifications about National Instruments products. Visit ni.com/critical-updates for information about critical updates from National Instruments.

Known Issues

You can access the software and documentation known issues list online. Refer to the National Instruments website for an up-to-date list of known issues in the DSC Module.

Bug Fixes

The following items are the IDs and titles of a subset of issues fixed in the DSC Module. This is not an exhaustive list of issues fixed in the current version of the DSC Module. If you have a CAR ID, you can search this list to validate that the issue has been fixed.

IDFixed Issue

Accessing the Help

Refer to the LabVIEW Help, accessible by selecting Help»LabVIEW Help, for information about the DSC Module.

Finding Examples

Select Help»Find Examples from LabVIEW to launch the NI Example Finder. LabVIEW examples for the DSC Module are located in the labviewexampleslvdsc directory. You can modify an example VI to fit an application, or you can copy and paste from one or more examples into a VI that you create.

Automating the Installation of NI Products

You can automate the installation of most NI products using command-line arguments to suppress some or all of the installer user interface and dialog boxes. However, starting with the August 2012 releases (products using NI Installers version 3.1 or later), you may need to perform additional steps before or during a silent installation of NI software.

If the NI product you are installing uses Microsoft .NET 4.0, the .NET installer may run before any NI software installs and may require a reboot before the installation of NI software begins. To avoid a .NET reboot, install .NET 4.0 separately before you install NI software.

For more information about automating the installation of NI products, refer to the following KnowledgeBase articles:

  • For more information about silent installations of individual NI products, refer to KB 4CJDP38M, Automating the Installation of a Single Installer.

  • For more information about silent installations of NI products in a suite, such as NI Developer Suite, refer to KB 4GGGDQH0, How Do I Automate the Installation of a Suited Installer?.

  • To determine what version of NI Installers your product contains, refer to KB 4CJDR18M, How Can I Determine the Type and Version of My National Instruments Installer?.
