Overview

The LabVIEW Datalogging and Supervisory Control (DSC) Module extends the LabVIEW graphical development environment with additional functionality for the rapid development of distributed measurement, control, and high-channel-count monitoring applications. The DSC Module enhances the LabVIEW shared variable, supports logging data to the Citadel and relational databases, enhances the Historical Data Viewer and the NI Distributed System Manager, provides support for Touch Panel devices running Windows Embedded Standard, and provides tools for graphing historical or real-time trends, enhancing the security of front panels, and writing custom I/O servers.

System Requirements

In addition to the system requirements for the LabVIEW Development System, the DSC Module has the following requirements:

  • LabVIEW 2012 SP1 Base, Full, or Professional Development System (32-bit)

  • At least 800 MB of disk space

  • 512 MB of RAM. National Instruments recommends 1 GB of RAM

  • Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 or later

Refer to the LabVIEW Readme for additional system requirements and supported operating systems for LabVIEW 2012 SP1.

Note  The LabVIEW 2012 SP1 DSC Module does not support Windows 8.

Installation Instructions

You can install all of your LabVIEW products—including the DSC Module—using the LabVIEW 2012 SP1 Platform DVDs. Refer to the LabVIEW Installation Guide on the LabVIEW Platform DVD 1 for installation instructions and system requirements.

To request additional LabVIEW Platform DVDs, refer to the National Instruments website.

Note  If you purchased this product with an NI Software Suite or NI Product Bundle, use the installation media that shipped with your purchase to install this product.

Licensing

The DSC Module relies on licensing activation. You have a temporary license for a 7-day evaluation period. When the evaluation period expires, you must activate a valid DSC Module license to continue using the DSC Module.

The NI OPC Servers application installed with the DSC Module provides a temporary license for a two-hour evaluation period. You must activate a valid license to continue using the NI OPC Servers application after the evaluation period expires.

Known Issues

You can access the software and documentation known issues list online. Refer to the National Instruments website for an up-to-date list of known issues in the DSC Module.

Bug Fixes

The following items are the IDs and titles of a subset of issues fixed in the DSC Module. This is not an exhaustive list of issues fixed in the current version of the DSC Module. If you have a CAR ID, you can search this list to validate the issue has been fixed.

Accessing the Help

Refer to the LabVIEW Help, accessible by selecting Help»LabVIEW Help from LabVIEW, for information about the DSC Module.

Finding Examples

Select Help»Find Examples from LabVIEW to launch the NI Example Finder. LabVIEW examples for the DSC Module are located in the labviewexampleslvdsc directory. You can modify an example VI to fit an application, or you can copy and paste from one or more examples into a VI that you create.

Automating the Installation of NI Products

You can automate the installation of most NI products using command-line arguments to suppress some or all of the installer user interface and dialog boxes. However, starting with the August 2012 releases (products using NI Installers version 3.1 or later), you may need to perform additional steps before or during a silent installation of NI software.

If the NI product you are installing uses Microsoft .NET 4.0, the .NET installer may run before any NI software installs and may require a reboot before the installation of NI software begins. To avoid a .NET reboot, install .NET 4.0 separately before you install NI software.

For more information, refer to the following KnowledgeBase articles:

  • For more information on silent installations of individual NI products, refer to KB 4CJDP38M, Automating the Installation of a Single Installer.

  • For more information on silent installations of suited NI products, such as NI Developer Suite, refer to KB 4GGGDQH0, Automating the Installation of a Suited Installer.

  • To determine what version of NI Installers your product contains, refer to KB 4CJDR18M, How Can I Determine the Type and Version of My National Instruments Installer?.
