niDMM Configure Auto Zero Mode (LabVIEW only)
niDMM Configure Measurement
niDMM Configure Sample Delay Mode
niDMM Error Query
niDMM Get Error (LabVIEW only)
niDMM Error Message (LabWindows/CVI only)
Note:Obsolete VIs/functions may cause a warning popup in existing LabVIEW DMM applications after NI-DMM 3.0.1 is installed.

Known Issues

  • When linking to a topic in the NI Digital Multimeters Help from the context help or opening the help file from a VI within LabVIEW, the NI Digital Multimeters Help launches and the relevant topic displays, but the location of the topic might not be highlighted in the table of contents.

  • The links in the function panel help in LabWindows/CVI versions 7.1 and 7.1.1 will not work unless you have downloaded the most recent version of the launchhelp.js file. Instructions for downloading and installing the file can be found in the KnowledgeBase entry Why Do I Get "Object Expected" Error When Opening Links in Function Panel Help? You can locate this KB by going to ni.com/info and entering rdnkbe in the Info Code field.

  • If you click a topic link in the NI-DMM C Reference Help section of the NI Digital Multimeters Help, you cannot use the Back button in the HTML Help window toolbar to return to the original topic.

  • NI recommends that you disable Windows power management modes, such as sleep, standby, and hibernate, when using this product. These modes terminate any NI-DMM operation in progress. Notice that in Windows Vista or on a laptop computer, the default power management settings are likely to enable sleep mode.

  • When you run setup.exe to install the software from the CD, you are prompted to choose whether you want to always trust software from National Instruments. If you do not select this option, your installation may be interrupted by one or more Microsoft Windows security dialog boxes. However, if you run setup from the command line, you will not receive this prompt, and the installer will automatically install NI's Software Publisher Certificate to the your Windows Trusted Publisher Store. If you do not want to make this change to your Windows Trusted Publisher Store, do not choose this installation method.

  • The NI PXI-4070 can not operate as a Traditional DAQ (Legacy) SCXI controller in Windows Vista.

  • The NI PXI-4070 was upgraded and new revisions of the device beginning with 191485A-01 are incompatible with versions of NI-DMM prior to 2.3. NI-DMM 2.3 and later provides support for all revisions of the NI PXI-4070.

  • The NI 4065/4070/4071/4072 can be programmed only with NI-DMM. NI-DAQ function calls and DAQ virtual channels are not supported by the NI 4065/4070/4071/4072. Using NI-DAQ with the NI 4065/4070/4071/4072 can cause an error that requires a system reboot.

  • In MAX under the Configuring Device window for the NI 4070 in Traditional DAQ (Legacy), Run Test Panels is grayed out.

  • In MAX under the Configuring Device window for the NI 4070 in Traditional DAQ (Legacy), Test Resources always indicates the device has passed the test regardless of the device's condition.

  • If you are replacing the NI 4060 with the NI 4065 or NI 4070/4071/4072 in an application that uses triggering, consider the following differences in behavior:

If your application relies on the routing behavior of the NI 4060 by not explicitly calling niDMM Configure Measurement Complete Destination, you must modify your application by calling the VI/function. Alternately, the NI 4065 and NI 4070/4071/4072 can emulate NI 4060 routing behavior by specifying the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareNational InstrumentsNI-DMMCurrentVersionlegacyMCRoute

where the value is a DWORD set to 1.

Note: For Windows Vista x64, specify the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareWow6432NodeNational InstrumentsNI-DMMCurrentVersionlegacyMCRoute

Without this registry key, NI-DMM sets NIDMM_ATTR_MEAS_COMPLETE_DEST to NONE for the NI 4065 and NI 4070/4071/4072. With this registry key, NI-DMM sets NIDMM_ATTR_MEAS_COMPLETE_DEST to the location where SCXI communication is configured in the application.

    • The NI 4060 configured as an SCXI controller automatically sets the Measurement Complete (MC) destination to the location where SCXI is configured (external or internal PXI/SCXI trigger lines).

    • The NI 4065 and NI 4070/4071/4072 configured as an SCXI controller automatically sets the MC destination to NONE.

  • There are known DLL collision issues with the Visual Basic debugger and National Instruments device drivers. A support DLL used by NI-DMM fails to load if Visual Basic has already loaded another DLL into the same address space. More information on this issue and solution are documented in KnowledgeBase entry 2Q1HG8A6. Refer to ni.com/support to access the KnowledgeBase.

  • niDMM Configure Measurement is an obsolete VI. It is recommended that you replace this obsolete VI with the niDMM Configure Measurement Absolute VI or the niDMM Config Measurement poly VI in all existing DMM applications.

  • Temperature measurements are not supported in the TestStand IviDmm step type.

Bug Fixes

The following items are changes in NI-DMM 3.0.1 from NI-DMM 3.0.
IDFixed Issue
135829Fixed an issue where NI 407x devices exhibited larger than normal offsets in AC current measurements when the Auto Zero property/attribute was set to Auto or Off after performing a self-calibration or external calibration.
The following items are changes from NI-DMM 3.0 to NI-DMM 2.9.
IDFixed Issue
112297Fixed an issue where, when taking LC measurements, the backlog returned from the niDMM_FetchMultipoint function returned the number of points sampled prior to averaging rather than the number of points available.
116484Fixed an issue where, if the error message was too long, the buffer returned by the niDMM_error_message function was not null-terminated. Now, the buffer returned by the niDMM_error_message function is always null-terminated.
131868Fixed an issue where niDMM_ConfigureRTDCustom and niDMM_ConfigureThermistorCustom set the C value to the user-specified value from the B parameter rather than from the C parameter.
157349If you upgraded to NI-DAQmx 8.9.0 or later after installing NI-DMM 2.9, then installing NI-DMM 3.0 or later will again enable switch devices to be used in the NI-DMM/Switch Express VI.

  • Temperature has been added to function.ctl. If this type def is being used in the prototype for a TestStand step, the step prototype will need to be reloaded before the sequence can be executed.

Changes in NI-DMM 2.8 from NI-DMM 2.7.2

  • Support for the NI USB-4065.

Changes in NI-DMM 2.7.2 from NI-DMM 2.7.1

  • Support for LabVIEW 8.5.

Changes in NI-DMM 2.7.1 from NI-DMM 2.7

  • Support for the NI PXI-4065.

  • New behavior: For NI 4065 and NI 407x devices, NI-DMM 2.7 incorrectly swapped the Settling Time behavior of triggered and non-triggered multipoint measurements. This behavior resulted in overly-short Settling Times in triggering/switching applications, which could affect measurement quality, and overly-long Settling Times in non-triggered applications. This behavior has been corrected in NI-DMM 2.7.1.

Changes in NI-DMM 2.7 from NI-DMM 2.6

  • Support for Windows Vista.

  • Datalogger support in NI LabVIEW SignalExpress 2.0 and later.

Changes in NI-DMM 2.6 from NI-DMM 2.5

  • Support for the NI PCI/PCIe-4065.

  • Introduction of the niDMM Cal Adjust Linearization VI and the niDMM_CalAdjustLinearization function.

  • A change was made in NI-DMM 2.6 to ensure that NI 407x devices operate as expected in industrial PC chassis and across MXI configurations (including MXI Express).

  • A change was made in NI-DMM 2.6 to ensure that the NI 407x front-end is fully configured before returning from niDMM Initiate or niDMM Control (when the Control Action parameter is set to "Commit").

  • On versions of NI-DMM prior to 2.6, NI 4060 users may encounter a rare intermittent behavior that results in a hang or crash. This behavior is typically encountered upon initializing the device a second time within the same instance of an application environment such as LabVIEW. This behavior may also be seen during a calibration routine within Calibration Executive and has been corrected as of NI-DMM version 2.6.

Changes in NI-DMM 2.5 from NI-DMM 2.4

  • Introduction of the DMM/Switch Express VI.

  • Introduction of the niDMM Control VI and the niDMM_Control function.

  • Support for LabVIEW 8.0.

  • Support for LabVIEW Real-Time Module 8.0 (NI PXI/PCI-4070, NI PXI-4071, and NI PXI-4072 only)

  • New behavior: Initializing a session with the niDMM Initialize VI or the niDMM_init function now closes any other existing sessions open to the same device in the same process. Calling the niDMM Initialize VI or the niDMM_init function therefore always results in the creation of a new session rather than returning an existing session.

Changes in NI-DMM 2.4 from NI-DMM 2.3

  • Support for the NI PXI-4071.

  • Introduction of the NI-DMM Express VI.

  • Support for NI SignalExpress 1.1.

  • Support in MAX for the Self-Test and Self-Calibrate buttons for NI-DAQmx devices has been added (NI PXI/PCI-4070 only).

  • Support for the "break-on-library-error" feature in LabWindows/CVI (CVI user protection).

  • NI-DMM removes Offset Compensation Ohms capability for ranges 100 kΩ and greater.

  • NI-DMM corrects the resistance reference adjustment function of the external calibration procedure.

  • The IVI Configuration Store file format now requires that all names be case-sensitive. If you use logical names, driver session names, or virtual names in your program, make sure that the name you use matches the name defined in the IVI Configuration Store file exactly, without any variations in the case of the characters in the name.

Changes in NI-DMM 2.1 from NI-DMM 2.0

  • Self-test and simulation have been added for the NI PXI-4070.

  • The 1 MΩ input resistance value is no longer valid for DC voltage measurements on the NI PXI-4070.

  • AC voltage measurements using the DC coupling on the NI PXI-4070 have been improved to account for a computational error.

  • A new error code, NIDMM_ERROR_INVALID_MEAS_COMP_DEST has been created. This error is returned if an Input Trigger or Sample Trigger source is set to the same value as the Measurement Complete (MC) destination.

  • The self-calibration algorithm for the NI PXI-4070 has been updated to improve the gain correction.

  • Resistance measurements have been improved for low resolutions that enable both ADC calibration and offset compensated ohms.
