System Requirements

The Control Design and Simulation Module has the following requirements:
  • LabVIEW 2010 Full or Professional Development System

  • At least 350 MB additional disk space for Control Design and Simulation Module support

  • (Optional) LabVIEW MathScript RT Module. In LabVIEW 2009, LabVIEW MathScript became the LabVIEW MathScript RT Module. You cannot run VIs from previous versions of LabVIEW that contain MathScript Nodes until you install and activate the MathScript RT Module or remove the MathScript Nodes from the VIs. If you have already purchased the MathScript RT Module, select Help»Activate LabVIEW Components to activate the product.

  • (Optional) LabVIEW SignalExpress. If you plan to install the LabVIEW Control Design Assistant, you first must install LabVIEW SignalExpress.

Supported Operating Systems

You can run the LabVIEW Control Design and Simulation Module installer on the following operating systems:
  • Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit)

  • Windows Vista (32-bit and 64-bit)

  • Windows XP (32-bit)

  • Windows Server 2003 R2 (32-bit)

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 (64-bit)

  • Mac OS X 10.5.0 or later

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS 4 or later

  • openSUSE 11.0 or later

The LabVIEW Control Design and Simulation Module installer does not support Windows 2000/NT/Me/98/95 or the Windows Server non-R2 editions.

Limitations on Mac OS X and Linux

The LabVIEW Control Design and Simulation Module on Mac OS X and Linux does not support the following features:
  • LabVIEW Control Design Assistant

  • Real-Time support

Version 2010 Features and Changes

The LabVIEW 2010 Control Design and Simulation Module incorporates the following new features and changes.

Enabled and Triggered Subsystems

When you use subsystems on a simulation or block diagram, you can configure those subsystems to execute only when enabled or triggered. An enabled subsystem is one that executes when a Boolean input to the subsystem receives a TRUE value. A triggered subsystem is one that executes when an input signal to the subsystem crosses 0 or an offset from 0 that you specify. The same subsystem can be both enabled and triggered, and you can specify the behavior of individual outputs of the subsystem when that subsystem does not execute.
To configure enabling or triggering for a subsystem, double-click the subsystem to display the Subsystem Configuration dialog box. Select Execution Control from the Parameters list and use the options under Parameter Information to configure the basic execution behavior of the subsystem. Select individual outputs from the Parameters list to configure the behavior of those outputs when the subsystem does not execute.
Note: The Simulation Model Converter also supports the conversion of your .mdl files that contain enabled and triggered subsystems.

Performance Enhancements

In previous versions of the LabVIEW Control Design and Simulation Module, some users experienced slow load times for simulation diagrams. The LabVIEW 2010 Control Design and Simulation Module improve load times for simulation diagrams.

Keyboard Shortcuts for Subsystems

The following table lists new keyboard shortcuts you can use to display the front panel and block diagram of a simulation subsystem.
Note: The <Ctrl> key in these shortcuts corresponds to the (Mac OS X) <Command> key.
Keyboard ShortcutDescription
Ctrl-double-clickDisplays the block diagram of the subsystem.
Shift-double-clickDisplays the front panel of the subsystem.

DAE Solvers

You can use the Implicit Systems functions to solve differential algebraic equations (DAEs) on a simulation diagram or within a Control & Simulation Loop. These functions enable you to use DAEs in building a simulation. Previous versions of the Control Design and Simulation module supported only ordinary differential equation (ODE) solvers. Navigate to Control Design & Simulation»Simulation»Implicit Systems on the Functions palette to access the following new functions:
  • Algebraic Variable

  • Implicit State

  • Implicit Variable

Note: You must select the BDF solver in the Configure Simulation Parameters dialog box to use these functions.

Save for Previous

In previous versions of the LabVIEW Control Design and Simulation Module, you could not save a VI that contained a Control & Simulation Loop for a previous version of LabVIEW. In the LabVIEW 2010 Control Design and Simulation Module, you can save VIs that contain a Control & Simulation Loop for LabVIEW 2009. You cannot save these VIs for LabVIEW versions prior to 2009.

Simulation Model Converter Enhancements

The Simulation Model Converter converts your .mdl files that contain enabled and triggered subsystems and configures the resulting subsystems in LabVIEW. Select Tools»Control Design and Simulation»Simulation Model Converter to launch the Simulation Model Converter dialog box and convert your .mdl files.

Support for Stateflow® Conversion with the Simulation Model Converter

In previous versions of the LabVIEW Control Design and Simulation Module, the Simulation Model Converter did not support the conversion of statecharts developed with The MathWorks, Inc. Stateflow® application software. In the LabVIEW 2010 Control Design and Simulation Module, the Simulation Model Converter converts statecharts developed with The MathWorks, Inc. Stateflow® application software into statecharts usable within the LabVIEW Statechart Module.
Note: To convert statecharts developed with The MathWorks, Inc. Stateflow® application software to statecharts usable within the LabVIEW Statechart Module, you must install the LabVIEW Statechart Module. Visit the National Instruments Web site for more information about the LabVIEW Statechart Module.

Installation/Upgrading Instructions

(Windows) You can install all of your LabVIEW products—including the Control Design and Simulation Module—using the LabVIEW 2010 Platform DVDs. You can find installation instructions for the Control Design and Simulation Module along with activation instructions in the following locations:
  • LabVIEW Release Notes, which are available in your LabVIEW software kit.

  • LabVIEW 2010 Platform DVDs Readme, which is available on the top-level of LabVIEW Platform DVD 1.

To request additional LabVIEW 2010 Platform DVDs, refer to the National Instruments Web site.

    cd /mnt/cdrom

  • To run the installation script, enter the following command:

    sh ./INSTALL

If you encounter the following message: "bad interpreter: Permission denied", the CD may not have mounted with executable permissions. To work around this, enter the following command:

    /bin/sh ./INSTALL
